The Star that Survived a Supernova

In the world of astronomy, it's widely accepted that when a star goes supernova, it dies - exploding in a spectacle of cosmic proportions.

However, there's a star that defies this rule, known as a 'zombie' star.

This star survived not one, but two supernovae.

Originally dubbed 'iPTF14hls', this celestial oddity was discovered in September 2014.

Its brightness peaked five times in the span of two years, indicating multiple supernovae.

Traditionally, a supernova lasts around 100 days, but this one was bright for more than 600 days.

This star was first recorded to explode in 1954, depreciated, and then exploded again in 2014, challenging the known laws of astrophysics.

Researchers suspect that it could be a 'Pulsational Pair Instability Supernova' which can undergo multiple eruptions over years.

It's an intriguing peek into the extreme lives of supermassive stars..
