The Multifaceted Octopus
Octopuses are among the most intelligent and behaviorally diverse of all invertebrates.
They possess advanced cognitive abilities and can navigate through complex mazes, open child-proof bottles, and even distinguish between different shapes and patterns.
They can change their appearance to blend seamlessly with their environment in a blink of an eye, thanks to the millions of pigment cells in their skin, called chromatophores.
Moreover, octopuses have three hearts, two of which pump blood to the gills, while the third circulates it to the rest of the body.
Interestingly, the third heart temporarily stops beating when the octopus swims, explaining their preference for crawling.
Octopuses also have blue blood as their blood uses copper-rich protein hemocyanin for oxygen transport, making it less efficient under normal conditions but more adaptive to extreme cold and low oxygen environments..
