The Loneliness of the Lighthouse of the Eiger

Perched precariously at an altitude of 2,864 meters (9,396 feet), partly dug into the middle of the north face of the Eiger, the Jungfraujoch railway station in Switzerland is known as the 'Top of Europe'.

What makes this even more amazing is its construction.

Building the rail line to Jungfraujoch took 16 years, from 1896 to 1912.

More than 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) of rail line was built through the Swiss Alps, seven of which go through the Eiger and Mönch mountains.

Work was difficult and dangerous, with several workers dying during the construction phase.

Today, the Jungfraujoch railway station serves as a testament to man's triumph against nature's challenges, standing as the highest railway station in Europe, greeting trainloads of tourists with breathtaking panoramas of snow-capped Alpine peaks..
