The Highest Point in Space
Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano on the big island of Hawaii, is officially the highest point in space when measured from base to peak.
While Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth measured from sea level, standing at a height of 29,031 feet (8,848.86 meters), Mauna Kea beats Everest in height when it's measured from its base at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean to its peak.
The height of Mauna Kea from base to peak is about 33,500 feet (10,200 meters), almost a mile taller than Everest.
However, only 13,796 feet (4,205 meters) of Mauna Kea is visible above sea level.
Also, Mauna Kea's base is so broad that if you were to drive around its perimeter at sea level, it would take you about a day to complete the journey..
