The Astonishing Lifecycle of a Dragonfly
Dragonflies, with their stunning aerial acrobatics and dazzling colors, are often admired for their beauty.
Yet, their life cycle is even more astonishing.
Unlike many insects, dragonflies spend a large portion of their life, up to several years, underwater.
Once the dragonfly larva also called a 'naiad' hatches from the egg, it lives underwater and goes through various stages of growth, molting as many as 12 times.
Dragonfly larvae are voracious predators, feeding on other insects, tadpoles, and small fish.
Eventually, it will crawl out of the water onto a plant stem to undergo the final molt, emerging as a fully-formed adult dragonfly.
This entire process can take anywhere from a few weeks in tropical species to several years in cooler climates.
These intriguing creatures essentially live two distinctly different lives within one lifecycle, showcasing nature's impressive complexity..
