The Unbelievable Lifespan of Greenland Sharks

Greenland sharks, native to the icy waters of the North Atlantic, are some of the longest-lived vertebrates on Earth.

According to a study published in the journal 'Science', these slow-moving fish have an average lifespan of at least 272 years, with the oldest individual shark studied being around 392 years old.

But that's not the limit, the scientists claim that the species might live to be over 500 years old, making Greenland sharks the longest living vertebrates known on Earth.

The longevity of these sharks is not just impressive due to its scale but also because of the slow pace at which they live.

They reach sexual maturity at around 150 years old and swim at a speed of about 0.76 meters per second, arguably the slowest in all shark species..
