Bacteria and Your Belly Button
The human belly button, also known as the navel, hosts a high level of bacterial diversity.
According to a study conducted by the North Carolina State University, there are at least 67 different types of bacteria living in our belly buttons.
The researchers collected samples from 60 people's navels and found more than 2,368 bacterial species, 1,458 of which may be new to science.
This bacteria, albeit gross, is harmless and can even be beneficial.
They contribute to the biodiversity of our personal microbiome, which is necessary for maintaining good health.
Each person's microbiome is unique, much like a fingerprint.
So, what we have in our belly buttons is a unique micro-ecosystem.
If we imagine our body to be a planet, our belly button could be seen as a rainforest brimming with life!.
